Experience is invaluable, until it becomes a trap. The strategies that built your book of business 15 years ago might be the same ones slowing you down today. But the flip side is true as well. Many younger professionals are building their practices in an AI-driven world yet missing the deeper lessons about consistency, relationship-building, and trust that take time to learn. Technology and communication are evolving fast, and even the most capable professionals, at any career stage, can find themselves playing catch-up. AI technology is moving so fast that it is almost mind-boggling. What worked smoothly last quarter might already feel outdated. The pace of change can be overwhelming, but it also opens doors for those who are willing to learn and adapt. Here’s the question: How quickly are you adapting your relationship skills and learning from the perspectives of those who work differently from you?
Reverse mentorship flips the hierarchy. It reminds us that experience and innovation are not opposites, they are complements. Senior professionals bring authenticity, discipline, and trust-building, the things no algorithm can replicate. Junior professionals bring visibility habits, digital fluency, and efficiency. When both sides share what they know, that is collaboration at its best, and in BD, relevance is currency. Three quick ways to try it: 15-Minute BD Exchange: Pair up with someone from a different career stage for a short chat. Swap insights; one of you shares BD fundamentals, the other shares new digital tools or AI workflows that save time. Digital Market Research: Before your next client meeting, ask a colleague to spend five minutes reviewing your contact’s online footprint and company news. Their perspective might surface a detail you would have missed, and it is a great way to keep your “Curiosity Opens Doors” mindset alive. Audit Your BD Tools: Pick one task you find tedious, such as meeting prep or follow-up tracking. AI tools can now generate a quick dossier on who you’re meeting with, their company updates, and talking points in minutes. Then, compare notes with a colleague about what apps or workflows they use to work smarter. You’ll both learn something new, and you’ll prove that technology and authenticity can coexist beautifully. Like many of you, I’m leaning in and learning how to make AI part of my workflow, not to replace what I do but to refine it. As I explore these tools more deeply, my goal is to help professionals use them to make business development smarter, faster, and more human. Experience builds credibility, but curiosity keeps it alive. Comments are closed.
